5-STAR REVIEW: THE SECRETS OF THE HIDDEN WORKFORCE by Lisa Toth

The Description

Publication Date: March 5, 2024

In The Secrets of the Hidden Workforce, Lisa Toth tells readers her story of falling in love with a population of people often overlooked and under valued. Toth not only saw value in the differently-abled, but also their potential to bring something society needed to the table. Always one to root for the underdog, she saw a way she could help by identifying the right jobs and find onramps for them to join the workforce. Toth created a staffing agency to do just this – help this gifted group of people find work that they can be proud of and find fufilling.

The book is written in a memoir style, full of stories and lessons learned. Be prepared to be inspired as you learn about the good, the bad and the ugly. Toth shares it all with refreshing honesty, while making a compelling case for embracing diversity and inclusivity for this often underemployed population.

The Review

Working with developmentally disabled individuals over the course of her career gives author Lisa Toth a unique perspective.

She shares the lessons she has learned in The Secrets of the Hidden Workforce. The book details how developmentally disabled individuals can learn to use their skills to do many types of jobs successfully as long as they receive training and social support. In the process, the workers find fulfillment and social acceptance.

Through examples, the author traces her passion for helping individuals with special needs to find success. Her drive stems from a need to open the eyes of the general public to the daily struggles of people with different abilities.

She weaves humor into her work, which is evident in the stories she shares. From the early days on the school playground, where she developed a protective streak, Toth continues to advocate for people with different abilities.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
