4-STAR REVIEW: AN ESCAPE GOAT by Janna Rollins

The Description

A Zen Goat Mystery: Book 1
Publication Date: March 12, 2024

After finding long-lost family through a DNA test, Callie heads to Bobwhite Hollow, New Hampshire, to meet a great-uncle she never knew existed. Charmed by the village and more than half in love with her new family, she decides to stay and open a goat yoga studio and retreat space.

When retreat guest Angilene Claudson turns up dead with a wine glass shattered at her side and Callie’s favorite goat lapping up the spill, the death is written off as an accidental overdose. But when the goat gets sick, Callie’s gut tells her it wasn’t an accident at all. With her new business on the line and a possible murderer staying in the guesthouse, Callie sets to work to uncover the truth and keep her family safe.

The Review

An Escape Goat is part of the Zen Goat Mystery series by Janna Rollins. Set on a family farm in New Hampshire, there are beautiful scenic descriptions, goats, and a retreat gone wrong. And when there’s a dead body found, is it murder or a death by natural causes, or maybe even an accidental overdose?

We are introduced to the characters and get to know them a little at a time. Several of those on the first-ever retreat are difficult to like, and many are just plain mean. The goats are adorable and play a role. Callie, the yoga instructor, has allergies when on the farm and around the goats, making things difficult.

Many stories are told and woven together nicely. The murder and an assault are front and center, and Callie plays amateur sleuth, much to others’ chagrin. There are twists and turns until the whodunnit is solved, which gives nice closure. The ending has a twist, and I look forward to meeting up with Callie and the others to see what they get involved in next.
