5-STAR REVIEW: MURDER IN THE APPALACHIANS by Susan Furlong

About The Book

Publication Date: April 1, 2025

On the run in the mountains…
with a killer on their trail.

After unearthing secrets from her late brother’s police notebook, journalist Emma Hayes discovers his death was no accident—he was murdered. Only someone doesn’t want Emma to find out the connection to the cold case her brother was investigating…and they’ll kill to keep it that way. Now Emma must rely on local ER doctor Logan Greer to help her stay alive and follow a trail of elusive evidence. But as they unravel a conspiracy, they realize that the killer could be anyone hiding in the mountains…

The Review

Investigative journalist Emma Hayes knows her twin brother’s death has something to do with the clues he left for her, but deciphering them puts her on a collision course with danger.

Lucky for her, Logan Greer steps in to help as the two dodge bullets in Susan Fuhrlong’s new book, Murder in the Appalachians. As a Christian-oriented suspense story, it successfully incorporates faith alongside a storyline packed with intensity.

Both main characters have experienced loss of some kind, causing them to question their faith. Rather than growing closer to God spiritually, some people tend to become isolated and bitter. The author uses secondary characters to provide positive examples of processing grief while still maintaining faith in God.

As Emma and Logan bond over their shared experiences trying to outrun a killer, neither is sure who to trust.

Murder in the Appalachians serves up a fast-paced slice of romantic suspense with plenty of small-town flavor.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
