Summary

Annapurna  puts the past and present on a collision course, revealing secrets and motives behind the fateful trip.

4.5-STAR REVIEW: ANNAPURNA by Meg Serino

The Description

Publication Date: May 6, 2025

During a treacherous winter trek to the basecamp of Annapurna, one woman is forced to confront the events leading up to her best friend’s tragic death twenty years earlier as well as the nature of their friendship, the meaning of love, and the unexpected consequences of what is spoken—and what is not.

Meg Serino artfully layers past and present to explore how our unruly desires and betrayals can be as fatal as nature. Both an adventure story and an addictive exploration of more human mysteries.” —Michelle Wildgen, Author of Wine People

When Livy receives a package containing the ashes of her best friend, she knows she must return to the place Mo loved best to honor her memory. Leaving her son and her estranged husband behind, Livy travels to Kathmandu and the mountain towns of Nepal, and to the past, along with the three other original members of the trek.

As they navigate the trail during harsh winter conditions, Livy is forced to confront painful memories and the revelation of long-buried secrets, putting her life—and her whole concept of self—on the line. She must finally face the mystery that’s haunted her all these years: the circumstances surrounding her best friend’s death.

Following Livy as she struggles to find a path to safety and self-knowledge through dangerously high altitudes and deadly avalanches, frostbite, and injuries, Annapurna explores the meaning of love, the nature of memories, and the often-entangled roles of a parent, spouse, lover, and friend.

Annapurna is a novel for anyone who has ever ventured from home hoping to find answers or to make peace with the past. Ultimately, it is a story about how far we sometimes need to go in order to discover where we belong.

The Review

Two decades after a horrible tragedy claimed the life of her best friend, Livy receives an opportunity to get closure.

Using Mo’s ashes as the catalyst, Livy organizes a return trip to the Himalayas in Annapurna by Meg Serino. She’s joined by three other members who made the fateful journey that claimed Mo’s life.

However, as with any reunion tour, the past simply can’t be replicated. Using Mo’s journal as a guide, Livy gains previously unknown insight into her friend.

Not only is it an emotional journey, but it is fraught with physical dangers, too. The weather conditions are dangerous, bringing threats of frostbite and sudden avalanches to life. The author aptly describes the toll of the trip as Livy and the others find themselves in trouble.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
