4.5-STAR REVIEW: THE EX I BURIED by Natali Simmonds

The Description

Publication Date: September 29, 2025

It’s been ten years since I saw my ex. Now his mother says I killed him…

The invitation to my ex-boyfriend’s funeral came out of the blue. I haven’t seen Jacob since an anonymous lie about me tore the two of us apart. But I can’t miss my last chance to say goodbye.

When I pull open the door to the church, every pair of eyes in the room lands on me. His mother glares at me from the front pew. And the words she cries send chills down my spine…

‘How dare you show your face here, Eva Walsh? You killed my son!’

I see the cold, angry stares and realise I’ve made a terrible mistake. Why would she say that? Is she holding onto the lie from all those years ago – is this her revenge?

His family have their suspicions. They don’t know the truth – they never did.

But how did Jacob really die? Has the past finally come back to haunt me? And how far will I have to go to protect myself – before it’s too late…?

An absolutely gripping, claustrophobic small-town psychological thriller that will get your heart pounding! Perfect for fans of addictive page-turners like The HousemaidThe Family Across the Street and None of This Is True.

The Review

It’s been a decade since Eva Walsh left her hometown of Cragstone, vowing never to return. However, the funeral of her ex-boyfriend is enough to force her to go back.

Author Natali Simmonds delivers a pulse-pounding psychological thriller in The Ex I Buried. Eva’s plan to attend the funeral and return to her somewhat chaotic life sounds reasonable. Old secrets and accusations rise to the surface, painting Eva as the town pariah. Small-town gossip is on display at its finest with everyone piling on.

In the midst of mourning, anonymous postcards add a sinister twist. Discovering that Jacob had been corresponding with someone pretending to be Eva prompts her to want to know the truth. She faces a cast of characters who seem to have changing motivations. What secrets is Iris hiding in the family home? Who is the strange man following her? Does Eva’s recent broken relationship with Mario have anything to do with the past?

With each chapter sending the storyline in a different direction, readers must rely on the author to tie up all the loose ends with the conclusion. To say the outcome is unexpected would be an understatement.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
