A woman confronts the surprising results of an ancestry test and begins to question the meaning of family and friendship in this wise, tender novel teeming with life—from the beloved #1 New York Times bestselling author of After Annie
No one knows you like your book club.
High school English teacher Polly Goodman can talk about everything and anything with the women in her book club, which is why they’ve become her closest friends and, along with her veterinarian husband, the bedrock of her life. Her students, her fraught relationship with her mother, her struggles with IVF—Polly’s book club friends have heard about it all.
But when they give Polly an ancestry test kit as a joke, the results match her with a stranger. It is clear to Polly that this match is a mistake, but still she cannot help but comb through her family history for answers. Then, when it seems that the book club circle of four will become three, Polly learns how friendships can change your life in the most profound ways.
Written with Anna Quindlen’s trademark warmth, humor, and insight into the power of love and hope, More Than Enough explores how we find ourselves again and again through the relationships that define us.

Set in New York and Connecticut, More Than Enough by Anna Quindlen is contemporary women’s fiction, filled with family and friends and everyday life.
Polly and Mark, a caring, almost too-good-to-be-true husband, are the lead protagonists. Polly’s brother is gay and successful, her mom is a judge, and her dad is living in a home due to health issues. Polly’s a high school teacher at a prestigious all-girls school and has tried hard to get pregnant. Her in-laws are kindness personified and are very family-oriented. No one knows what anyone else is dealing with in their lives, and this is so true in this book. A core group of friends forms a book club but never reads the book. They meet to discuss everything else, but often hold back. Polly’s best friend in the group is Sarah, and we learn of her goodness and philanthropy, as well as her health issues.
The story has multiple stories, woven together often unexpectedly. There is a depth to the stories, but some details felt sparse. There are vivid descriptions of feelings, the city, the country homes, and an alpaca farm. There were emotional moments throughout, along with surprises and unexpected twists. The story had sadness and tears, some happiness, and shocking, surprising revelations. The tale ended abruptly, and I didn’t realize the book was ending. An epilogue set somewhere in the future would have given better closure.
More Than Enough is a book filled with many emotions that we encounter in everyday life as we go about our days, never knowing what we’ll come up against and how we will handle any given situation.
