Author Dee Armstrong wins the prize for delivering a 400+-page story that I never expected would cycle my emotions by combining epic snarkiness with suspense. Haunted by a Broken Oath provides an introduction to JD Wolfe, a private investigator whose personality would likely be described as “weird” because she is haunted by a ghost.
While I was initially skeptical of the ghost aspect, it works well with JD’s character. Her backstory before being adopted by the Wolfe family shapes much of her distrustful personality. As a freshly minted private investigator in the family firm, she gets her first case.
Trouble seems to find her, though, whether it’s a decorated war hero’s alleged suicide or the disappearance of local children. The multi-layered storyline delivers plenty of depth through memorable characters. Needless to say, I can’t wait for JD’s next adventure.
