4-STAR REVIEW: GETTING TO YES by Tim Hunniecutt

The Description

Publication Date: January 5, 2024

Florida, 1978. Nineteen-year-old Chris is inexperienced in the world of love, but that’s soon to change. In the summer between his high school graduation and his admittance into, he delves into his first foray with love—and comes out the other side burned. Yet he presses on, meeting Quentin…and Cathy…and Anna Lina…

But it’s not until one night when he locks eyes with Chloe, that his world stops.

Things are immediately easy with Chloe, and they fall into each other’s arms and each other’s lives. But where Chris is immediately smitten with tender love for Chloe, she guards her emotions, holding herself back from saying “yes” to his love. As time and distance separate the two, Chris must determine if Chloe is worth pursuing, and if he’ll ever get her “yes.”

Sweet, tender, and nostalgic, Tim Hunniecutt’s coming-of-age romance story Getting to Yes is an ode to young love and commitment, and is not to be missed.

The Review

With the gift of gab, Chris never has to worry about a lack of female company. His story begins the summer after high school in 1978 when he pours on the heat in order to gain more experience in the dating world.

Getting to Yes highlights his adventures as the young man soon learns how challenging women can be. Author Tim Hunniecutt devotes chapters to the various women crossing Chris’s path, leaving behind a trail of laughter and some regrets.

From the church visit with Cathy to the two-timing Colleen, Chris gathers physical experiences but falls short on the emotional side (or at least reciprocated). When he meets Chloe, though, he feels an instant connection. Separated by time and location, Chris is determined to win the girl.

As a side note, the author was inspired by his own happily ever after. He channels his own emotions through Chris, particularly the uncertainty of whether Chloe would ever be his. For some, love is more of a marathon than a sprint, and this is a perfect example of that journey.

Amy Wilson
My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
