Captains Wanted blends metaphysical and literary fiction to send readers on a journey of mind, body, and spiritual healing.
Inspired by personal anecdotes with indigenous ceremonial and Western therapeutic modalities that author Andres Schabelman sought after working at some of Silicon Valley’s largest tech companies, this captivating story combines elements of magical realism and literary fiction to offer an experimental take on success and self-growth.
Captains Wanted tells the story of what happens when people are willing to follow a new path, especially one they don’t logically understand. Through a collection of ceremonial anecdotes that touch upon each of the senses, readers are invited to not merely observe but actively participate in the quest for self-discovery. In the end, they are encouraged to draw their own conclusions about what has occurred and embark on a personal odyssey, where the meaning and significance unfold uniquely for each individual.
Author Andres Schabelman’s Captains Wanted is dreamlike and a little different. It will make you leave your comfort zone and enter the otherworldly.
Many aspects resonated with me, such as looking for a job that will lead to a career. One goes on the interview, and you hope and believe you have done well, feeling like the job is yours. Only to discover that you “weren’t the right fit for the job.” That is the worst feeling in the world. Most people can relate to that, especially when we were young and didn’t have enough life experience to draw from and use to our benefit.
The rest of the book is eccentric and dreamlike. The protagonist’s experiences were beneficial for his future as a captain.
The most important message I took from this book is that we are all captains of our own ships and must navigate our life paths.
Captains Wanted dares to take the readers on a journey of self-discovery and healing within a metaphysical platform.
A successful tech entrepreneur, Andres Schabelman was one of the first thirty Airbnb employees. He built a successful career helping expand businesses internationally, culminating with him being on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange as the VP of International Expansion at Fiverr when they went public in 2019. He has a master’s degree in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School and a BA from Williams College. These accolades, among others, matter less to him now than his current dream of showing the magic and power of human connection around the world. Born and raised in New Orleans to Argentine-Jewish parents and within a broader Colombian immigrant community, Andreas currently travels the world nomadically with a base in Mexico.
