3.5-STAR REVIEW: PAWS OF DEATH by Amy Hueston

The Description

A Canine Confections Mystery: Book 3
Publication Date: January 20, 2022

Two murders on the same strip of Worth Avenue in Palm Beach means dog bakery owner Samantha Armstrong and her fellow shopkeepers have reached their quota of bad stuff. Right?

They should be so lucky…

Samantha is thrilled that life in her new hometown has finally settled into a fun, peaceful rhythm. Canine Confections’ business is on the upswing, and her days are filled with jogs on the beach with her pooch Sweet Pea, cozy time with Aunt Mary on her aunt’s estate, and yummy treats at her upscale dog bakery. But things are not peaceful for long when Donna from the local gossip magazine, Pulse on Palm Beach, winds up dead at Samantha’s first foray into catering a millionaire dog’s birthday party.

Once again, Samantha finds herself smack dab in the middle of the investigation. But this time, it’s another reporter from Pulse that’s making her center-stage. With the aid of her precious Sweet Pea, Samantha pads around the splashy Worth Avenue sniffing out clues. Unfortunately, the more she searches, the more suspects she finds. And it doesn’t help that Angelina from Mystic Dreams has hired a psychic who warns that trouble in Palm Beach isn’t about to end anytime soon.

Includes an original recipe from the world-famous Three Dog Bakery!

The Review

Paws of Death was a nice continuation of the Canine Confections Mystery series by Amy Hueston but was very repetitive throughout. The clues were mentioned every time Samantha discussed the murder and other crimes or even thought about it. Of course, the local police wish she would let them do their job without her interference. She figures she has a track record to keep up with since she’s an amateur sleuth and has done well in helping solve the other murders in town.

There are twists and turns to the story, along with some levity. There is an interesting cast of characters among the small business owners, and some of them seem very shallow. I liked the addition of all the dogs and her aunt’s cat to the story. There were vivid descriptions of the stores, the businesses, her aunt’s house, and the beach area. Although this is said to be the third and final book in the series, there seem to be more stories to tell. There is some closure with solving the latest murder but some loose ends.

  1. Thank you so much for reading this and no, it’s not necessarily the final in the series at all! In fact, the characters are behind the big velvet curtain backstage telling me what stories they want to share. NEW stories, with maybe snippy Bethany showing a softer side (or not? Hmmmmm…..) and Aunt Mary getting together with her chef instead of Detective Trumble? And we still haven’t delved into the Rick/Samantha lack-of-relationship yet. Plus a new character or two to throw everyone for a loop. This time, Samantha just might stay the heck out of it, that is if there IS a next murder…. oh of course there will be, this is a cozy mystery after all.
Thanks again for reading and reviewing. I appreciate your time and effort and a place on your fabulous website.
    Amy

    • Glad to hear the series will continue. There is so much more for these characters. Thanks for the hints of what may or may not happen.
