4.5-STAR REVIEW: THE CONNECTION GAME by S.S Turner

The Description

Publication Date: March 21, 2023

Benny Basilworth makes connections. A rare intellect, he sees things that others don’t see and draws conclusions that others completely fail to grasp. He has the kind of mind that can make a person a national sensation on the television gameshow “The Connection Game”– and the kind of mind that can be the target of predators.

Despite his brilliance, Benny and his family find themselves destitute, living in a basement apartment with one tiny window that affords them only the view of the feet of passersby on the street above. It is from this vantagepoint that Benny once again starts making connections. Mad, inconceivable connections. Connections that can change lives . . . and turn the entire world upside down.

Humorous, surprising, wise, and remarkably perceptive, The Connection Game is a novel unlike any other and one that you are unlikely to forget.

The Review

The Basilworth family is much like any other English family of four. They live comfortably, with Benny and Bell working while Will and Wendy attend school. It’s Benny’s ability to see patterns with his advanced intellect that enables him to win the grand prize on a game show.

With The Connection Game, author S.S. Turner delivers a one-of-a-kind story about a family plunged into the depths of despair after losing everything, only to stumble upon a bizarre real-life version of a game that threatens their lives.

Bell steals the show as the no-nonsense wife and mother trying to steer her family away from their strange fascination tracking the feet of people walking by their basement-level flat. When she gets caught up in the excitement of creating patterns and predicting behaviors by serving as a data gatherer on the street, events quickly snowball.

While there’s a lot of detail devoted to different categories of foot owners: Normals, Abnormals, and Unknowns, along with the Inexplicables, the key concept of the story demonstrates the power of data collection.

The family manages to draw the conclusion that bad guys are planning something sinister, which only increases their frenzied data collection. Narrated by Bell, readers soon pick up on clues that there’s something very disturbing happening within her husband’s mind.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
