5-STAR REVIEW: HONORABLE DARKNESS by C.R. Rice

The Description

The Realm Series: Book 9
Publication Date: February 23, 2023

Legends claim they are a pair born with souls so tarnished that they steal all the light and happiness from those who dare cross their path.

Revered as beings of myth and legend, they are the first twins born in the Realm for eons. They have become the monsters parents warn children about when they misbehave. Many of the kingdoms see them as a dangerous abomination.

Authenticity has been lost in time, leaving only the twisted and embellished tales of the impossible twin princes that had everything but desired more. After the significant loss of their mother, their only source of joy was their sister, Evie. But when she is taken under mysterious circumstances, the twins clash with their father, each other, and the rules of life itself in an attempt to save her life.

When it comes to the truth of their lives, Hex and Snip find themselves wishing the twisted stories of their past were true. For the truth is much, much worse.

The Review

Twin boys, whose birth rocked the Realm, are set on a destructive path after a series of losses.

Author C.R. Rice delivers the ninth installment in The Realm series with Honorable Darkness. Focusing on Hex and Snip, the book details their birth and subsequent trials by three of the Seven Kings, which sets the stage for them to make a choice with devastating consequences.

The author has clearly excelled in the world-building process, serving up a fantasy land where magic and spells are commonplace. There’s also the power-hungry group that causes strife.

Losing their mother during the birth of their sister was bad enough; when disaster strikes again, the twins are no longer tethered together but are broken apart as penance.

While I would have loved to have read more of the backstory, the author provided enough to make this installment stand alone. It did, however, whet my appetite to go back and learn more about The Realm.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
