ER doctor Sloane Marks is shattered when she learns her husband Ethan slept with his partner at Seattle Homicide. She considers leaving him and joining The One, having gone to college with the popular dating app’s billionaire founder, Brody Carr. But at forty-two, Sloane feels she has no choice but to forgive Ethan if she wants a chance at creating the family she never had.

Months later, Sloane bumps into Brody, who’s recently returned to Seattle. In due time, Ethan worries she’s cheating. His suspicions are confirmed when he learns the rich app founder took Sloane on a freediving excursion in the San Juan Islands. When Brody’s famous wife dies in an accident, Ethan becomes the lead investigator in her death—which he suspects wasn’t an accident at all.

Caught between a distrusting husband and a powerful billionaire who protects his secrets at all costs, Sloane is in a fight for her life. And the only way out is to take matters into her own hands.

The Review

Betrayed by infidelity, Sloane Marks decides the only way she can move forward is if her police officer husband, Ethan, experiences the fear of losing her.

When a chance encounter with a former college lab partner turned billionaire dating app founder generates sparks, the stage is set for revenge. However, author Audrey J. Cole amps up the suspense in The One by killing off the billionaire’s wife under suspicious circumstances with Sloane as the emergency room physician.

Soon, her simple revenge plan takes a sinister twist as Ethan’s investigation reveals the possibility of a murder plot masterminded by the billionaire and Sloane as an unwitting accomplice.

Ultimately, someone must be held accountable. Can Ethan compromise his integrity and protect Sloane? Will their marriage survive?

The author delivers an engaging story packed with twists and turns. Sloane’s character is backed into a corner thanks to her career and a ticking biological clock. Her efforts to get Ethan’s attention may destroy any chance for a happy ending.

The One dangles an enticing catch in the form of a billionaire showering attention on a woman in a troubled marriage, leading to an explosive conclusion.

Amy Wilson
My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
