5-STAR REVIEW: THE PERILS OF LADY CATHERINE DE BOURGH by Claudia Gray

The Description

Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney Mysteries Series: Book 3
Publication Date: June 18, 2024

The third book in the Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney Mystery series, which finds the amateur sleuths facing their most daunting challenge yet: preventing the murder of the imperious Lady Catherine de Bourgh.

Someone is trying to kill Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Esteemed aunt of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, generous patroness of Mr. William Collins, a woman of rank who rules over the estate of Rosings Park with an unimpeachable sense of propriety—who would dare? Lady Catherine summons her grand-nephew, Mr. Jonathan Darcy, and his investigative companion, Miss Juliet Tilney, to find out.

After a year apart, Jonathan and Juliet are thrilled to be reunited, even if the circumstances—finding whoever has thus far sabotaged Lady Catherine‘s carriage, shot at her, and nearly pushed her down the stairs—are less than ideal. Also less than ideal: their respective fathers, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy and Mr. Henry Tilney, have accompanied the young detectives to Rosings, and the two men do not interact with the same felicity enjoyed by their children.

With attempts against Lady Catherine escalating, and no one among the list of prime suspects seemingly capable of committing all of the attacks, the pressure on Jonathan and Juliet mounts—even as more gentle feelings between the two of them begin to bloom. The race is now on to provoke two confessions: one from the attempted murderer before it is too late—and one, perhaps, of love. The Review

Juliet Tilney and Jonathan Darcy find themselves deep in the throes of another mystery. This one involving the inimitable Lady Catherine DeBourgh, whose very life is being threatened, and as she declares, the situation is not to be borne. Claudia Gray strikes just the right tone in her latest intriguing mystery, The Perils of Lady Catherine DeBourgh.

Having heard of the successful investigatory exploits of Juliet Tilney and Jonathan Darcy, they are summoned to Rosings Park at the urgent request of Lady Cathrine DeBourgh. Their services are needed post haste to investigate and discover the culprit(s) attempting to eliminate Lady Catherine.

Accompanied to Rosings Park by their fathers, Henry Tilney and Fitzwilliam Darcy, Juliet and Jonathan arrive to discover a myriad of possible suspects. With several incidents having already happened, the pair begin their investigation promptly, only to find they do not quite enjoy the same harmony they recently shared. At the same time, both fathers observe their children interacting with the other.

As the investigation continues, however, Juliet and Jonathan regain their former comradery, and while the fathers have doubts about the match, Elizabeth Darcy has no such qualms. But . . . will the increasing number of attempts on Lady Catherine’s life derail any possible hope of a match?

Claudia Gray has penned another delightful mystery in The Perils of Lady Catherine DeBourgh. Jane Austen’s beloved characters, joined by a few new additions, search for clues and reasons why someone would wish Lady Catherine harm. Could it be Colonel Fitzwilliam and his wife, Ann DeBourgh? Or could it be Mr. or Mrs. Collins or even one (or both!) of their two children, Katy and Deb (short for De Bourgh)? They are all acting mysterious. Juliet and Jonathan work steadily, sifting through clues and experiences until finally exposing the culprit and reason for their deadly endeavors. But, will it be too late to save the insufferable Lady Catherine, or will the shades of Rosings Park be thus polluted forever?
