4-STAR REVIEW: THE FIRST BINDING by R.R. Virdi

The Description

Tales of Tremaine: Book 1
Publication Date: September 5, 2023

Don’t miss the first novel in this stunning Silk Road-inspired epic fantasy series from R.R. Virdi—a saga of legends, lies, and the secretive storyteller who’s spun them all.

All legends are born of truths. And just as much lies. These are mine. Judge me for what you will. But you will hear my story first.

I buried the village of Ampur under a mountain of ice and snow. Then I killed their god. I’ve stolen old magics and been cursed for it. I started a war with those that walked before mankind and lost the princess I loved, and wanted to save. I’ve called lightning and bound fire. I am legend. And I am a monster.

My name is Ari.

And this is the story of how I let loose the first evil.

The Review

While an epic fantasy series may not be the most popular genre, author R.R. Virdi knows how to weave fantasy, myth, and legend into a powerful tale.

The First Binding serves as the first installment of the Tales of Tremaine series. It introduces readers to Ari, who serves as a Storyteller in the fictional world created by the author. His talents will call forth stories of bards from the past who travel from place to place and entertain with breathtaking stories.

The difference, though, is Ari possesses magical abilities along with powerful secrets that are revealed when he encounters the mysterious Eloine. In telling his true story to her, rather than the stories he has crafted, readers are taken into the past for a high fantasy journey ending with a cliffhanger.

The author clearly demonstrates his skills in creating a mythical place full of well-developed characters. While it can be challenging to stick with the story if you aren’t a dedicated fantasy reader, the author deserves kudos for an excellent writing style.

About The AuthorR.R. VIRDI is a two-time Dragon Award finalist and a Nebula Award finalist. He is the author of the urban fantasy series The Grave Report and The Books of Winter. One of his short stories is part of a collection of artists’ works to go to the moon aboard the Astrobotic Peregrine Lunar Lander in 2022. His love of classic cars drove him to work in the automotive industry for many years before he realized he’d do a better job of maintaining his passion if he stayed away from customers.

He was born and raised in Northern Virginia and is a first generation Indian-American with all the baggage that comes with. He’s offended a long list of incalculable ancestors by choosing to drop out of college and not pursue one of three pre-destined careers: a lawyer, doctor, engineer. Instead, he decided to chase his dream of being an author. His family is still coping with this decision a decade later.

He expects them to come around in another fifteen to twenty years.

Should the writing gig not work out, he aims to follow his backup plan and become a dancing shark for a Katy Perry music video.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
