5-STAR REVIEW: ECHOES OF US by Joy Jordan-Lake

The Description

Publication Date: October 8, 2024

From the bestselling author of Under a Gilded Moon comes the soaring story of an unlikely friendship of three men and one extraordinary woman and the legacy they built—if their own secrets don’t destroy it.

In the midst of World War II, a Tennessee farm boy, a Jewish Cambridge student, and a German POW forge a connection that endures—against all odds.

But now everything that Will Dobbins, Dov Silverberg, and Hans Hessler fought for is at risk as their descendants clash for control of the corporation they founded together. In an attempt to remake its tattered corporate image, the firm hires event planner Hadley Jacks and her sister Kitzie to organize a reunion for the families on St. Simons Island, Georgia, the place that changed all three men’s lives forever.

As Hadley and her sister delve into the friends’ past, they uncover the life of the courageous young woman who links them all together…and the old wounds that could tear everything apart.

Told in dual timelines spanning World War II and the present, Echoes of Us follows the ripple effects of war, the bonds that outlast it, and the hope that ultimately carries us forward.

The Review

Sisters Hadley and Kitzie have built a reputation for event planning. However, arranging a reunion for three families brought together by events during World War II poses quite a challenge.

Author Joy Jordan-Lake delivers an utterly fascinating slice of historical fiction in Echoes of Us. Told in alternating viewpoints and featuring two timelines 80 years apart, the focus is on St. Simons Island, Georgia.

As part of the reunion planning, the sisters delve into the past to understand the connection between three men whose lives intersected unexpectedly, leading them to begin a corporation together.

In the process, they discover the three men were connected to a young woman who played an important role in the war effort. The author provides interesting details about the WASPs in this captivating saga.

As the two timelines converge, an unexpected twist adds a deeper dimension to the story. With a nod to historical accuracy, the author uses a solid blend of fact and fiction to shed light on the U-boats killing Americans on the East Coast.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
