4.5-STAR REVIEW: DON’T TRUST MOTHER by Carey Baldwin

The Description

Publication Date: July 22, 2025

She says I’m her daughter… She’s lying, right?

My life was perfect—with a handsome, loving husband, a beautiful home and devoted family who gave me everything I could ever have wanted. Until she knocked on my door.

There on the porch, I see a woman who looks just like me. I almost believe her when she says seven words that turn my world upside down: “I’m Sandra Steele. And I’m your mother.”

She’s lying. She must be. My real mother died in an accident. But the police have started asking questions. And now this woman is here… was she involved?

I go cold all over. She bites her lip, just like I do when I’m nervous. She knows things only a birth mother would know. But there are holes in her stories, and her accent doesn’t match where she says she’s from.

I don’t trust her. But I already have a plan… I’ll get to know her. Pretend I don’t notice the little lies, so I can uncover the truth of who she is, and why she’s here.

Because she’s hiding something…

But so am I.

The Review

Haunted by the sudden death of her mother, Ivy Pinnacle finds her life unraveling. Yet the nightmares that plague her aren’t a match for a stunning revelation.

Author Casey Baldwin serves up a twisted storyline that will have readers reaching for notepads to ensure they have all the details straight. Don’t Trust Mother offers many angles that prove to be red herrings.

What is certain, though, is that a woman shows up claiming to be Ivy’s birth mother. Ivy’s fragile mental state adds to the confusion, along with a letter from her mother seemingly confirming the news.

Does the woman want Ivy’s money? Why is her husband keeping secrets? As Ivy tries to determine what Sandra is hiding, she maintains her own secrets. As secrets start to unravel, the story reaches a startling yet satisfying conclusion.

Amy Wilson
My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
