4-STAR REVIEW: THE NOT SO HAPPY COUPLE by Emily Shiner

The Description

Publication Date: October 30, 2026

It was their happily ever after. Until they found the body…

I’ve been playing the perfect wife to Bradley for a year now, cooking dinner every night and making sure his suits are pressed just the way he likes them. This weekend, we’re taking a trip on his yacht for our anniversary.

But on board, a dead body is laid across the rumpled sheets in the master bedroom.

My husband stares intently at the dead woman on our bed. Then I see something flicker across Bradley’s face.

That’s when it hits me: my husband recognises this woman…

But I can’t admit that I do, too.

She was pretty when I knew her. That was years ago. Now, are all the secrets I thought I’d kept tightly locked up about to come tumbling out?

The Not So Happy Couple will keep you up reading late into the night! Fans of The Perfect Marriage, Love, Mom and Freida McFadden will be totally hooked.

The Review

A dead body proves to be the catalyst for a web of secrets and lies between a married couple.

Author Emily Shiner delivers a psychological suspense in The Not So Happy Couple. At first glance, Marissa and Bradley seem to be a perfect match. Appearances certainly prove to be deceiving.

The story unfolds via three perspectives: Marissa, Bradley, and Cami. It doesn’t take long to discover that none of the characters are particularly likable. Bradley’s manipulation coupled with Marissa’s inner whining leaves much to be desired. Add Cami to the mix for added drama, but her revenge plot is never-ending.

The investigation into the dead body found on their yacht merely speeds up the inevitable conclusion, although the author manages to squeeze in a few twists.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
