He Promised Them Opportunity. He Gave Them Death. Three Young Women Vanished. One Survivor Exposed Their Killer.

Los Angeles in the 1950s drew young women with promises of work, independence, and a chance at something bigger. Harvey Glatman saw an opportunity of another kind.

Posing as a photographer and using lonely-hearts clubs and modeling agencies to find victims, Glatman abducted and murdered Judith Dull, Ruth Mercado, and Shirley Bridgeford, leaving their bodies in the Southern California desert. For months, their disappearances remained disconnected and unexplained.

Then Glatman targeted Lorraine Vigil. She fought back, survived, and helped expose the man behind a horrifying series of crimes. Investigators soon uncovered photographs of bound women and evidence linking Glatman to the missing victims.

A killer had been hiding in plain sight. Drawing on court records, contemporary newspapers, archival material, and original research, BOUND TO DIE: The Young Victims of a Serial Killer and Rapist follows Harvey Glatman’s trail from the streets of Los Angeles into the desolate Southern California desert, where three young women met their deaths.

The Review

Research into Harvey Glatman, who was often described as mousy and owl-eyed, illustrates valuable context around someone whose painful shyness seemed to fuel deviant behavior.

Author Richard L. Carrico shares Glatman’s story in Bound to Die. A deep dive into his childhood reveals a fascination with ropes and pain, along with various indicators of strange and devious behavior.

The story traces Glatman’s escalation into an obsession with females, leading to prison and parole at an early age. To find his victims, he poses as a photographer in Los Angeles. It’s there that his fantasies come to life with a rich pool of idealistic young women seeking to become famous, along with trolling through the many lonely-hearts clubs.

The author documents Glatman’s victims and his ability to remain undetected until his run-in with Lorraine Vigil, which proves to be his undoing.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
