About The Book

Publication Date: May 1, 2023

Spitfire, Petunia Hollings was born in 1935 in the deep South. She spends her childhood working the cotton fields and longing for her daddy to love her as he does her siblings.

Spending time with her best friend Opal is one distraction Petunia looks forward to. Opal’s skin color was never a problem. Or so Petunia thought.

After young love sweeps Petunia to a new life in Chicago, she learns to accept love as it’s offered instead of expecting more than one can give.

When circumstances force her to return home, her friendship with Opal helps Petunia’s fractured heart start to heal.

Then a new, even more dangerous threat surfaces. Will Petunia find the strength to overcome the hatred surrounding her?

The Review

Carol Louise Hollings, more commonly known as Petunia, knows the path out of her family shack in Arkansas is to get hitched.

Author Leah Brewer gives readers a dose of country living with Petunia 1949. Forced to leave school in second grade to pick cotton and perform family duties, Petunia loves church gatherings and spending time with her friend, Opal.

The author creates a realistic image of Arkansas during this time period. Her family has suffered a number of challenges—especially financially. While there is no indication that Petunia understands why her dark-skinned friend is treated differently, readers will immediately understand the racial implications.

Petunia’s story takes her to Chicago as a young bride, where she sees her husband go off to fight in the war. She ends up back in Arkansas, where she faces a true test of character that will define her future.

Before she started writing, you could find Leah behind a computer working her telecommunications job that she’s had for over twenty-five years.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
