Summary

Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up delivers a main character who is unafraid to poke fun at herself and her circumstances. Once she changes her perspective thanks to secondary characters, starting over doesn’t seem so bad.

THE BASIS OF FORTHCOMING ABC SITCOM NOT DEAD YET

Nell Stevens’ life is a mess.

When her business goes bust and her fiancé with it, Nell’s happy ever after in California falls apart and she moves back to London to start over. But a lot has changed since she’s been gone. All her single friends are now married with children, sky-high rents force her to rent a room in a stranger’s house, and in a world of perfect Instagram lives, she feels like a f*ck up. Even worse, a forty-something f*ck-up.

But when she lands a job writing obituaries, Nell meets the fabulous Cricket, an 80-something widow with challenges of her own, and they strike up an unlikely friendship. Together they begin to help each other heal their aching hearts, cope with the loss of the lives they had planned, and push each other into new adventures and unexpected joys.

Because Nell is determined. Next year things are going to be very different. It’s time to turn her life around.

Time to fall in love with your life.

The Review

Nell Stevens thought she had her life planned out, but with a failed relationship in California, she heads back to London for a fresh start.

It turns out that her friends have all gotten married and had children, which serves as a painful reminder that Nell hasn’t made a dent in her bucket list. Author Alexandra Potter shares Nell’s adventures in Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up.

This incredibly witty storyline focuses on the debut of Nell’s podcast, in which she confesses her woes at being over 40 with unfulfilled dreams. Nell’s character is refreshingly blunt about her experiences, which leads to a number of humorous moments.

Each podcast ends with Nell making a list of things she’s grateful for. As her character evolves and interacts with others, she gets to a much better point in life where she can embrace the aging process.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
