The storyline expands as the author begins revealing secrets that all seem to be connected to dreams and nightmares. The unpredictable events add to the suspense as the Walker family tries to get a handle on why these nightmares are happening and what they really mean.
Add a 19-year-old unsolved murder into the mix and the writer very skillfully weaves in a connection to Culver Creek and the Walker family. As a reader, I never could have imagined the plot twists that would take place before the story ended.
From a character standpoint, I alternated between which parent I wanted to reach out and shake some sense into. Whether it was Luke and his quirky nighttime behavior of locking the bedroom door or Caitlin and her obsession with Pacifcleon, a sleep aid, both parents had their share of flaws. However, those flaws are what make this story so enjoyable.
Do dreams and nightmares foreshadow future events and reveal hidden secrets? After reading Up the Creek, it does seem possible. Sometimes the past just won’t go away until everything is settled.
