Summary

To Win Her Hand by Jen Geigle Johnson is a light, engaging read that teeters between satire and a serious Regency romance. It’s entertaining as the panorama plays out, swaying first one way and then the other. At times you are thoroughly convinced it’s satire, while other times, you’re so deeply involved with the characters, you find yourself experiencing their emotions right along with them.

The Description

A Gentleman’s Match: Book 1
Publication Date: December 15, 2022

An expert at winning a woman’s hand. A woman who cannot be won.

Lord Featherstone has the world on his shoulders. Or at least his world. With two brothers and a failing estate he must make funds somehow. But what happens when he falls for a woman? Will his tactics work when the situation is so close and personal?

Everyone thinks Lady Loveluck is a wealthy widow. What they don’t know is that she is on the brink of hiring herself out as a Governess in order to pay for her next meal. The only thing keeping her from employment is a growing reputation as a matchmaker. As long as she never falls for another man, as long as she doesn’t allow herself to be fooled into marrying, she will be just fine.

But she never counted on being caught up in the beguiling tactics of London’s renowned and not so secret matchmaker for men.

The Review

To Win Her Hand by Jen Geigle Johnson is a true Regency romance, complete with “the Season” and its obligatory beautiful young ladies in search of the perfect husband and handsome young men in search of the fair maiden.

The leading characters in this time-honored tableau, matchmakers Lord Charles Featherstone and Lady Emmeline Loveluck, are completely in their element and supremely confident in their skills. What they’re entirely unsure of, however, is what to do with their feelings for each other.

Lord Featherstone is a matchmaker of the highest order. He takes on only the most select of clients and assists them in enhancing how they present themselves to secure the hand of the young woman they most desire.

Lady Loveluck, conversely, applies the same skills, assisting young ladies to present themselves in the most favorable light. Both matchmakers adeptly apply their skills, assisting their young charges to successfully navigate the sometimes torturous London season.

When Lord Featherstone and Lady Loveluck encounter each other while accompanying their clients, sparks fly. A series of events throw them together, each trying to convince themselves the motive is to further their client’s best interest.

When Lord Featherstone decides he must give up his love for Lady Loveluck to allow her a more advantageous match, he tries valiantly to convince himself he’s done the right thing. But what of Lady Loveluck? Does she agree? Does she want financial security over true love? It takes a fateful encounter in the park to convince them both they’ve come to the right conclusion.

Whether satire or not, it’s a fun and entertaining read, and no matter if you think you know the ending long before it comes, it’s a pleasant journey getting there all the same.  Buy Links
