5-STAR REVIEW: NOT THE ONES DEAD by Dana Stabenow

The Description

Kate Shugak: Book 23
Publication Date: April 11, 2023

What seems a tragic accident soon becomes a murder investigation as Kate is drawn into a case of political intrigue.

A mid-air collision in the Alaskan wilderness between two small aircraft leaves ten people dead. Was it a bird strike, pilot error… or premeditated murder?

Then an eleventh body is found in the wreckage: a man shot gangland style, twice in the chest and once in the head.

In an investigation that reaches to the highest levels of government, justice may not be served, but Kate Shugak is determined that the truth will out, even at the risk of her life and the lives of those she loves most.

The Review

The beauty of Alaska shines through as author Dana Stabenow continues her thrilling series featuring private investigator Kate Shugak.

Not the Ones Dead marks the 23rd installment, once again creating an action-packed adventure featuring well-developed characters and an intriguing mystery.

In a land where air travel is the primary means of transportation, a mid-air collision between two planes claims multiple victims. The story takes a more sinister twist when the investigation reveals an additional victim dead with gunshot wounds.

The author skillfully weaves in a secondary narrative focusing on a new cult-like group of residents in the area who rely on armed guards and intimidation tactics.

Kate spearheads the investigation that promises danger at every turn. Despite the danger, she’s determined to reveal the truth, no matter the cost.

While this was my first introduction to the series, I had no problems getting my bearings. If anything, it certainly has motivated me to go back and catch up on the other books.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
