The Review

It’s fascinating how a beloved fairy tale can morph from a childhood tale into a dark fantasy that seems hauntingly realistic.

In the second installment of her Fairy Tale Retellings, author Rachel L. Demeter delivers Red Kingdom. Using elements from Little Red Riding Hood, she skillfully creates a 15th-century adventure that pits a princess against a man named The Black Wolf.

Princess Blanchette Winslowe, clad in the resplendent red riding cloak, barely survives the siege of her family’s castle. The horrifying battle comes to life with the clang of swords and the smell of blood. Her family dead, Blanchette is all that remains of her family’s line.

Rowan Dietrich, the Black Wolf, has earned his reputation but retains a fierce code of honor. When Blanchette is captured, Rowan ensures that she is treated fairly. In the process, Blanchette gains insight into her father’s cruelty, which led to the attack.

With vivid detail, the author brings the time period to life. Rowan and Blanchette must put their differences aside in order for the attraction between them to grow.

About The AuthorI live in Sunny California with my dashing husband, who inspires my romance novels every day!

Writing has always been an integral part of my identity. Before I physically learned how to write, I’d narrate stories to my mom, and she’d record them for me.

I graduated from Chapman’s film school, where I often received the feedback on my scripts, “Your stories and characters are great, but this reads like a novel!” That’s when I realized my true calling.

Themes my novels never stray far from include forbidden romance, soul mates, the power of love to redeem, mend all wounds, and triumph over darkness.

In my free time, I frequent reptile expos, lift double my body’s weight, and indulge in dinosaur trivia.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
