4-STAR REVIEW: WRECKED by Susana Mohel

The Description

Publication Date: December 8, 2022

He wanted to forget. I wanted an escape.
In just one night David put my world upside down. Repeatedly.
He asked me to stay, but instead, I ran.
Thank you for giving me more than I was looking for. I left those words in a note on the nightstand. Little I knew that sentence sealed my fate.
I thought I’d never see him again.
Life goes on, four years later I’m doing my best to stay afloat when a fire devastates my father’s little church.
And guess who’s in charge of the rebuilding?
Yes, you guessed it. He’s here. He’s back.
But I’m not alone anymore.
I have a son.
And there’s no more places to run.

The Review

Wrecked is the second book I’ve read by Susana Mohel, and it will definitely not be my last. I went into the book, not having read the blurb or seen the cover. I knew I enjoyed the other book I’d read by Ms. Mohel, so I took a chance.

David and Ella had a one-night stand years before. Ella snuck out in the middle of the night with no way for David to contact her. Fast forward a couple of years, and David is in a small California town to do some community service to satisfy some conditions in a will when he comes face-to-face with Ella and her son, who looks suspiciously like him. So the question is, what will David and Ella do about it?

I’m not the biggest fan of the secret baby trope, as it can often be a hard sell for me. But I do love the reunion story. Honestly, I felt the secret baby part of the story was just too easy. There needed to be more turmoil for me regarding the whole situation. Everyone was so accepting of the whole thing that it almost was a non-plot and could have easily been eliminated from the story.

The reunion trope was a little better, but again, there wasn’t enough turmoil. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want an angst-filled book, and I’m the first to complain when the characters go overboard with the internal back and forth. But it was, again like there was this immediate acceptance of their chemistry and situation and little conflict to shake things up.

Now, after all that, it sounds like I didn’t like the book. But I did. I read it mostly in one sitting, turning the pages because I got hooked on the story. I liked David and Ella and was cheering them on. But I kept looking for that conflict or for something to threaten their relationship, and that part fell flat and is the main reason this wasn’t a 5-Star read for me.

All in all, I enjoyed Wrecked. It pulled me out of a reading slump, and I can’t wait to read more from Susana Mohel. Ms. Mohel’s storytelling and writing are quite enjoyable. I hope that instead of primarily focusing on character development, a little more meat can be included in the romance for a more well-rounded book.
