5-STAR REVIEW: THE CAFE AT BEACH END by RaeAnne Thayne

The Description

Cape Sanctuary: Book 5

Publication Date: June 13, 2023

For fans of Debbie Macomber and Susan Wiggs, an emotional story of starting over and reclaiming happiness.

When Meredith Collins was a child, the little beach town of Cape Sanctuary lived up to its name. Spending summers there with her grandmother, Meredith finally felt safe and loved.

Now she’s returning in disgrace. Her late ex-husband swindled investors out of millions of dollars and made Meredith a figure of scorn—though she knew nothing about his scheme. But she still has the beach cottage she inherited from her grandmother and half ownership of the local café. It’s a place to work and earn a little money. That’s if her cousin, Tori, will let her through the door. Once, Tori and Meredith were as close as sisters—until Meredith chose her neglectful parents’ expectations over their bond. Now widowed with a teenage daughter, Tori isn’t setting out a welcome mat for the woman who let her down so badly.

While Meredith tries to make a fresh start, she is drawn to a mysterious writer renting the cottage next door. Liam Byrne’s kindness is a balm, though she worries he might not be so friendly if he knew who she was. But Liam has his own secret and a mission that will help Meredith confront her past—and maybe, claim a surprising future…

The Review

A wonderfully told story with vivid placement descriptions and relatable, heartwarming characters, The Café at Beach End by RaeAnne Thayne is a pure delight.

Meredith Collins is an enigma when she arrives in Cape Sanctuary. She’s left luxury and “society” behind, carries a Luis Vuitton purse, has only $300 to her name, and drives a rundown car that carries her into Cape Sanctuary on a wing and a prayer. What has brought her to this point, and how will she cope with moving forward with her life?

While Meredith is glad to be in Cape Sanctuary, where she loved coming to visit her grandmother while growing up, she dreads the inevitable encounter with her estranged cousin, Tori Ayala. She and Tori had been like sisters growing up until life intervened.

Meredith was carried away to a life of luxury, misery, and abuse at the hands of a selfish and mean husband who ultimately defrauded thousands of their lifetime savings and retirement incomes. Her husband is killed in prison, and many—including the FBI and IRS—believe Meredith has to know what he did with the millions he stole.

Tori Ayala, a widowed single mom, stays on the island, continuing to run the popular Beach End café, blaming Meredith for abandoning them, not knowing what Meredith has lived through.

Liam Byrne is one of those convinced Meredith has to know where the money is hidden. A forensic lifestyle accountant with a personal reason for vowing to find the money, he follows and befriends Meredith, determined to uncover her secret.

Tori and Sam Ayala, Tori’s brother-in-law and island police officer, share the common goal of ensuring their daughters graduate eighth grade but also discover they also share a mutual attraction. As the characters learn more of and about themselves and each other, their feelings and impressions evolve and transform until what was certain before isn’t quite so certain anymore.

The Cafe at Beach End by RaeAnne Thayne is the perfect summer read with its clapboard cottages, windswept beach, pounding surf, popular local café, and a romantic tale containing the perfect blend of unforeseen twists and turns. Strong characters struggle to cope with life the best they can. They might just discover that the best way is with the help of someone you love and who, incredibly, loves you back.
