4.5-STAR REVIEW: THE LADY WHO CRIED MURDER by Lauren Carr

The Description

Mac Faraday Mystery: Book 6
Publication Date: January 2, 2014

Fame comes at a price. Some pay with their privacy. Others pay with their pride. Khloe Everest paid with her life.

Determined to get her pretty face in front of the cameras, Khloe Everest fakes an abduction only to make a grand entrance in the midst of a press conference held by Spencer’s Police Chief David O’Callaghan.

Three years later, after failing to catapult her notoriety into a long-lasting celebrity, Khloe Everest returns to Spencer after her mother’s sudden death and seemingly finds another weapon to propel her into the spotlight. This time, someone kills her before she can make an entrance.

In Lauren Carr’s sixth Mac Faraday Mystery, Mac and his friends come up against reality stars, politicians, has-beens, and wannabes. Mac also finds himself face-to-face with an old foe from his past who had managed to escape arrest during their last encounter. Now, Mac sees that his adversary has only become more powerful, and dangerous, with the passage of time.

Intent to not let this killer escape again, Mac and his friends need to put all of their talents together to put a stop to a cold blooded lady killer.

The Review

Retired homicide detective Mac Faraday is hot on the trail of a serial killer in The Lady Who Cried Murder by Lauren Carr. As the sixth installment of the Mac Faraday Mystery series, the story is set against a backdrop of reality entertainment and politics — two topics guaranteed to generate a buzz.

Readers new to the series will find a helpful cast of characters at the beginning of the story, which provides helpful context. From there, it’s an action-packed storyline featuring Mac, Archie, and David, along with secondary characters who create the framework for this mystery. The beloved canine companion, Gnarly, provides a humorous touch along with other four-legged critters.

The intensity level increases when Mac discovers a possible connection between the latest murder and a sexual predator from his past. Add a tape with highly incriminating contents, and clues start coming together.

At this point in the series, the author highlights the relationship between David and Chelsea. This match-up is dynamic and is a perfect focus now that Mac and his lady love, Archie, are settled.

My name is Amy W., and I am a book addict. I will never forget the day I came home from junior high school to find my mom waiting for me with one of the Harlequin novels from my stash. As she was gearing up for the "you shouldn't be reading this" lecture, I told her the characters get married in the end. I'm just glad she didn't find the Bertrice Small book hidden in my closet. I have diverse reading tastes, evident by the wide array of genres on my Kindle. As I made the transition to an e-reader, I found myself worrying that something could happen to it. As a result, I am now the proud owner of four Kindles -- all different kinds, but plenty of back-ups! "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets high marks on my favorites list -- not for character development or dialogue (definitely not!), but because it blazed new ground for those of us who believe provocative fiction is more than just an explicit cover. Sylvia Day, Lexie Blake, and Kristin Hannah are some of my favorite authors. Speaking of diverse tastes, I also enjoy Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Konrath. I’m always ready to discover new-to-me authors, especially when I toss in a palate cleanser that is much different than what I would normally read. Give me something with a well-defined storyline, add some suspense (or spice), and I am a happy reader. Give me a happily ever after, and I am downright giddy.
